History of Laguna Seca

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is a world-renowned motorsports facility located in Monterey, California. The track, which features a 2.238-mile road course with 11 turns, is known for its iconic Corkscrew turn and is widely regarded as one of the most challenging and exciting tracks in the world.

The track was founded in 1957 by the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), a group of local car enthusiasts. It was initially called Laguna Seca Raceway and was built on a former military base. In 1977, the track began hosting the Monterey Historic Automobile Races, which has become one of the most popular and prestigious vintage car events in the world.

In 2005, the track was renamed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in honor of the Japanese automaker, which had been a long-time sponsor and supporter of the facility. However, in 2018, the track was once again renamed, this time to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, in honor of the American car accessory manufacturer WeatherTech, which had become a major sponsor of the facility.

Today, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca hosts a variety of motorsports events, including the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship, and the Monterey Historic Automobile Races. The track has also played host to numerous other major racing events, including the CART/Champ Car World Series, the American Le Mans Series, and the AMA Superbike Championship.

Over the years, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca has been the site of numerous memorable moments in racing history, including the dramatic finish to the 1996 IndyCar race, where Alex Zanardi overtook Bryan Herta on the final lap to win the race. The track has also been the site of numerous record-breaking performances, including the fastest lap ever recorded at the track by Marc Gené in 2012 driving a Ferrari Formula One car originally driven by Rubens Barrichello in the 2003 season.

In addition to its reputation as a premier racing destination, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is also known for its commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. The track has implemented a variety of measures to reduce its carbon footprint, including the use of solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations, and a water recycling system.

Despite its storied history and reputation as a leading motorsports facility, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca remains a popular destination for racing fans and competitors alike, and continues to be a vital part of the motorsports landscape. So, it is a very good place for motorsports enthusiasts.
